Please help I have a car insurance question I’d really appreciate it.?

   i have highpoint..they are pretty cheap..mercury wasnt to high for me either.but i think they only offer that in nj and pa..but try them both..Geico is high for young drivers..just to let ya kno..but $120 a month isnt really that high..i pay $105 a month with high point

   Well you are a young driver in the city so it will be expensive no matter where you go. I personally was able to get a really good rate from Geico when I was in college so try them, and mention you are a student it might get you an extra discount. Also if you really are the good driver you claim to be and you diver the stereotypical college beater car then I wouldn’t carry collision on it. This will reduce your premium. However if you are still making payments on the car then this wont be an option. Also consider lowering your coverage to your states minimum. I know it seems scary but at this point in your life you probably don’t have that much in assets to lose so carrying an excessive amount of liability coverage is unecessary.

   12/7/06 Update: blb does make a good point, but at the same time you might want to consult a lawyer on that particular topic. Garnishing can happen but you are essentailly unemployed for the next 2 years or longer depending upon the degree you are getting. It gets legally sticky for the person trying to go after the salary of someone who is currently unemployed. Eitherway it wouldn’t be bad to brush up on liability laws. Espiecially if you still legally reside with your parents, as there have been some cases where the parents of college student have been sued even though the driver had their own policy. Also at that point sometimes some of their policy can be volunteered to cover any additional liability that your policy didn’t. One thing I wouldn’t do is consult the ins company for information on what coverage to carry. I know that sounds silly but I have yet to get a straight answer out of any rep in this matter. The answer usually is …as much as you can afford, which is a translation to we want as much money as you can give us. Also when asked the question what is the average cost of accident claims, the answer I have always gotten in "well there is no such thing as an average accident. Which in short is balognia, there must be a mathmatical average payout per incident. Just remember car ins companies are trying to sell you something so their info is more like infomercial. again no offense ment to blb

   Jeremy suggested lowering your limits to the lowest possible limits for liability since you don’t have any assests right now. If you were to get sued and it is for an amount higher than what you have on your auto insurance they can attach a lien to any future wages. You would not have an option as it would be taken directly from your paycheck. Your future earnings are a major asset!!
